Gary Shaw Golf was launched back in 2017, when I began my PGA training at Tullamore Golf Club.
Although I’ve been comfortably out as a gay man in my personal life, I never expressed that side of myself whilst training as a golf professional, and as such, feel I am doing myself and the LGBT+ community a disservice…

I know, what it’s like to grow up as a LGBT+ golfer, playing in club tournaments, championships, representing teams, or just general play. It can feel lonely/isolating, particularly if you’re struggling to express who you are. For example, a common question I get asked during lessons is “have you a girlfriend, wife, or kids”. Whilst saying “no” is perfectly fine and actually correct, the sheer discomfort that is felt, as I (generally) try to navigate the topic of conversation away from my love life, can be crippling and feels inauthentic. It may hinder the connection between myself and the client, and thus the quality of the lesson/interaction delivered.

Moving forward as a golf professional, I simply wish to be open, as a straight person would – no more, and no less.

It’s vitally important for my mental health, job satisfaction, the client and perhaps most of all; other LGBT + golfers out there, who may be watching on, and feel isolated having almost zero representation within the sport. Discovering someone they can relate to, might give them enough reason to play just one more day, and hopefully, become lifelong players.

To help with this, I will be more visible throughout my social media, website etc. And over time, hopefully bring together a group of LGBT+ people who want to enjoy the game of golf, in a safe, welcoming, yet competitive environment! This group is “Inclusive Golf”.
